Translation Exercise - 4
Ravi lived in a small village in the Dumka district of Jharkhand. Every morning, he would collect wood from the nearby forest and sell it in the market to run his family’s daily expenses. But deep inside, he had a dream — to join the Indian Foreign Service (IFS).
His family was struggling; his mother was ill, and his father’s work would stop during the rains. Ravi somehow completed his graduation from a local college, but had no resources for further preparation. One day, he shared his dream with his younger sister Rekha. She was two years younger but very mature.
Rekha sold her jewelry and, along with other village women, started making bamboo baskets and mats. Within a few months, their handmade goods gained popularity even in nearby towns, and the income started improving.
Ravi noticed the change but never asked for help again, not wanting to burden anyone. One evening, he received a letter in the post. Inside was an admission letter to a coaching institute in Ranchi and a train ticket.
His sister came from behind and said with a smile, “It’s time for you to fly high. You are the hope of our dreams.”
Tears welled up in Ravi’s eyes. He hugged his parents and sister and the very next day, he left for Ranchi, determined to make his IFS dream come true.
